About This Quote

People often refer to World War I as the Great War. Personally, I think that it should be called the Great Waste of Life . The war was called Great because it caused so much suffering to so many people. But, if we strip away all of the rhetoric and show people just how brutally brutal the war was, it is hard to call it truly Great.

The war was fought on one side with tanks and planes, while on the other side there were horses and spears. Fighting on one side of a river meant crossing over to the other side. That meant going through a mile or more of enemy lines.

The sight of a lone horseman charging headlong into a German machine gun nest was common.
